It’s January – the month our new house was supposed to be ready. Not that anyone believed it. Nothing against our builder, we love him, but with a September start date, we figured we’d need more time.
And I’m the one who could use it most. I’ve spent months immersed in design inspiration and I know the overall look I want, but sometimes that feels like a moving target. In the end – I’m all about the vibe and that’s my north star – honoring the feeling I want. Open. Airy. Warm. Comfy. Eclectic but Cohesive. Fun. Stylish and awesome. I was obsessed with white and light wood. Now I’m obsessed with greens and warmer wood. My plan is to keep it neutral with just the right amount of color and tones. Some days I like muted colors. Some days brighter. Tik. Tok.
Decision Time
When we first discussed moving to the suburbs, I imagined a black and white modern farm house, but they got a little too trendy in my new ‘hood so we switched to all white, which opened up options for front door color. That’s when I hatched my plan of all white, light grey roof (instead of the original dark pewter we chose.) and a light yellow front door. I must say in advance I didn’t think I was “yellow door kind of person.” I might have even mocked it at first, but then it gelled in my mind as we moved to the white, airy exterior plan. Problem is: I love a light yellow for the front door but all the new furniture these days is marigold (prefer that color name to mustard). I’ve become enamoured with the bolder yellow color for furniture but I can’t do it for the door. These are the things that keep me up at 3am. Not because I can’t sleep from thinking about it, but because I stay up ’til all hours looking at inspiration pictures. I want to stay in a consistent color pallete and don’t want two yellows. Crazy? Or kudos for consistency? Either I find the perfect yellow to bridge the gap or move to green, which is creeping up the options ladder. And for the record, I will have two shades of green in the palette. Because you know – green.
Update: it’s worth noting that I’ve now warmed up to the idea of a natural wood door. But…. already picked out the door and it came primed for painting, though the inside view is still wood. One of the crazy things about building a house is, for many things, you have to make decisions before you know how everything is coming together. There’s usually workarounds though. No wood door, but we’ll do a wood fence (Michael’s idea – he gets the credit) and I now love that direction so much more than white.
